The Welsh Judo Association is proud to recognise three remarkable individuals who have dedicated decades of service to our sport — Eileen Heaven, Neil Lawcock, and David Smith — as they retire from their roles as judo referees.
Refereeing is one of the most demanding and vital roles in judo. It requires discipline, confidence, fairness, and a deep understanding of the values that underpin our sport. It means long days on the mat, weekends away from family, and the responsibility of making split-second decisions — always with integrity and respect.
Throughout their many years of service, Eileen, Neil, and David have exemplified everything that makes judo special. They have each served as mentors, teachers, and role models — guiding generations of judoka, supporting countless tournaments, and helping to maintain the highest standards of fairness and sportsmanship.
Their calm presence and unwavering professionalism have earned the respect and admiration of athletes, coaches, and fellow officials alike. Beyond the medals and contests, they have embodied the true spirit of judo — respect, humility, and honour.
As they bow off the mat in their official capacity, their legacy will continue to shape Welsh Judo for years to come. The impact they’ve made — through their dedication, kindness, and leadership — will live on in the referees and athletes they’ve inspired.
On behalf of everyone at Welsh Judo — our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and wider community — we extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Eileen, Neil, and David for their incredible commitment to our sport.
Thank you for everything you’ve given to judo. We wish you all the very best in this next chapter of your journey.
