Girls That Judo Launch 2024

The Welsh Judo Association was delighted to launch its brand-new Girls That Judo programme on Saturday 27th July.

The launch saw over 55 women and girls on the mat, with the programme aim of improving gender equity and helping aid the growth of women and girls' judo across Wales.

The programme, led by Welsh Judo staff member, Steph Walker, aspires to be a monthly a session with the long-term aim of every club in Wales running weekly Girls That Judo sessions.

"Irrespective of gender or age, judo can change the way women and girl see themselves and challenge gender norms. It can also be a great leveller, helping people see beyond their prejudices and to break down barriers" Steph Walker, Welsh Judo Association.

The development of judo in recent decades has led to full gender equality, despite different historical competition pathways. Judo now has the same contest rules, joint events, equal awards and prize money for men and women, equal Olympic quota, and mixed team participation.

However, women and girls are still underrepresented in Judo from grassroots to leadership roles. We hope that, with programmes like Girls That Judo, we can start to create a judo community for women and girls across Wales.
