“Nothing short of inspiring. Engaging, empowering girls of all ages and skill levels” – Sanshirokwai Dojo
Girls That Judo (GTJ), a groundbreaking initiative led by Steph Walker, a Welsh Judo employee and final-year student at the University of South Wales, launched Girls That Judo in July 2024 to address the unique barriers women face in judo, a discipline that has long been male-dominated.
GTJ, now in it’s 8th session, continues to provides a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for women and girls aged 5 and above to train together, free from the pressures of mixed-gender environments. The monthly sessions, held in various locations across Wales, offers high-quality coaching, led by female role models who empower participants with technical skills, self-defence techniques, confidence, and a strong sense of community.
The initiative has already attracted national and international guest coaches, including Olympians Lele Nairne (Paris 2024) and Karen Roberts (Sydney 2000, Commonwealth Gold Medallist), significantly enhancing the credibility and impact of the programme.
Girls That Judo continues to inspire, break down barriers, and create opportunities, helping to shape a more inclusive future for Welsh judo.
