This National Coaching Week, we’re shining a light on a brilliant story that reminds us why coaching is about so much more than just sport. It’s about people, connections, and life-changing opportunities.
Meet Thasan and Ashwin Yoganathan, a father and son from Wales whose journey into judo started in the most unexpected way.

What began as a chance introduction soon turned into something much bigger. After moving back to Wales, Thasan took the plunge and committed to the sport, earning his black belt and becoming a Level 2 qualified coach. That dedication meant he could coach his own son Ashwin — not just locally, but on the international stage.
Earlier this year, the pair travelled to Poland for the Bytom European Judo Hopes Tournament, an exciting event that brings together young athletes from across Europe. For Ashwin, it was about more than just competing, it was a chance to test himself, make new friends, and experience the wider judo community, connecting with young judoka from countries like Israel.
Their story is a powerful reminder of what coaching can do. It builds confidence, opens doors, and strengthens family and community bonds.
As we celebrate coaches this week, let’s take a moment to thank them , for the time, energy and belief they pour into others. They’re helping shape the next generation, both on and off the mat.
👏 Thank you, coaches. You really do make a difference.Social media isn’t just about scrolling through feeds; it’s a game-changer for clubs looking to expand their reach and engagement.
