2019 has been a very successful year for our Welsh Pre-Cadets and Cadets. In September, they brought home a huge medal haul from the Commonwealth Judo Championships in held at the University of Wolverhampton. This weekend saw 20 Welsh judoka travelling to compete at the English Institute of Sport Arena (EIS) in Sheffield to compete at the 2019 Pre-Cadet and Cadet British Championships.
The competition got off to a great start with a total of six medals and three fifth places. In the Cadet category Jack Hayes (-42kg) won silver, followed with two brilliant bronze medals from Kylan Alward (-46kg) and Brandon James (-50kg), with Max Masuku (-42kg), Rhys Evans (-42kg) and James Smith (-46kg) performing well for their 5th places. The Pre-Cadets’ followed suit, with Tyra Thomas (-63kg) and Paige Keane (-70kg) winning silver, with bronze for Lola Hodson (-48kg).
More medals followed on Day 2, which saw Dragon Academy’s Holly Devall (-63kg) add to her Commonwealth Judo Championship title from earlier this year to become British Champion. Millie Bayliss (-63kg) joined her teammate on the podium to win bronze. Fellow Pre-Cadet’s Evan Price (-34kg) and Lawrence Hill (-38kg)finished the tournament in style winning silver and bonze respectively.
It was a fantastic weekend of judo and a sure sign of the success to come.
